Back to School Plumbing Tips: How to Keep Your Home Water-Wise

The kids are going back to school and that means more plumbing traffic in the morning and evening hours. You’ve probably been trying to get into a new routine for the last few weeks, and now is a good time to add plumbing to your list! We have some easy ways for you to keep your home running smoothly for the school year ahead.

Clean Your Garbage Disposal

When everyone is getting ready to leave the house in the morning, your garbage disposal is undoubtedly receiving a lot more use from hurriedly eaten breakfasts. Cleaning your garbage disposal regularly will prevent blockages from happening. Or, consider upgrading to a newer and more efficient model if it is due for an upgrade.

Pre-Plan Shower Times

If you’re running out of hot water during peak showering times, try staggering your showers so that there’s a gap of at least 15 minutes between use. This will give your water heater time to recover. Or consider an upgrade to a more efficient water heater, such as a tankless model. This will allow for an endless supply of hot water and a happier family!

Run the Fan in Your Bathroom

It’s a good idea to keep the fan going whenever the bathroom is in use, especially with the rise in usage of the shower. By doing this, you will stop moisture from gathering and eventually causing mold or mildew. If your fan is not working, consider having it repaired or replaced.

Clean your Washer and Dryer

As kids go back to school, usually there’s more laundry; especially if they’re playing sports. If you want your laundry equipment to last, adopt the habit of regularly cleaning it. This includes hiring someone to professionally clean your dryer vents every few years.

Clear Your Drains

The bathroom is often busiest on weekday mornings after school starts. If you use the shower, sink, and toilet in quick succession, it puts pressure on drains and makes them more likely to become blocked. Take a little bit of time to make sure all bathroom drains are clear and running freely to reduce the risk of backups when you need your appliances most.
