4 Ways to Prevent Frozen Pipes

When the temperatures start to drop, we worry about bundling up to stay warm. While we are digging out the winter coats and boots, we should remember to insulate other areas as well– like our pipes! Even in warmer climates, your pipes are still at risk for freezing. Frozen pipes can cause them to burst, leading to serious water damage and expensive repairs. Like many things, prevention is the best course of action when it comes to frozen pipes. Here are four ways that you can prevent frozen pipes in your property this winter.

1.  Insulate. There are many ways that you can keep your pipes warm, but one of the easiest is to apply some insulation directly to the pipes. A layer of pipe insulation wrapped around your pipes is like giving them a nice winter coat for the season.

2.  Find and seal cracks and holes. Lots of energy is lost through cracks and holes surrounding your pipes. This is also an easy way for freezing air to get in. Find them and seal them with caulk or spray foam before the weather turns.

3.  Heat your home– even when you’re away. It might seem silly to leave the heat on when you’re not going to be home, but it’s crucial in preventing frozen pipes. It doesn’t have to be balmy warm– just warm enough to stave off freezing.

4.  Let the faucet run. A small drip in your faucets can keep water circulating, which helps in preventing frozen pipes.
